Step Up to Support Foster Youth: Volunteer with EDIFY
At KVC West Virginia, we believe every child deserves the chance to thrive. That’s why we created the EDIFYProgram, a unique initiative that provides mentorship, academic support, and encouragement to foster youth in grades 3-7. These resilient students often fall behind due to the unpredictable nature of foster care, including frequent school changes that disrupt their learning and instability. With your help, we can change that.
Why We Need You
The EDIFY Program pairs volunteers with foster youth to offer academic support. As a college student, your knowledge across various subjects makes you well-qualified to help these students succeed. Many of our students require assistance with foundational skills in English Language Arts (ELA) and Math, and your support can help them catch up, build confidence, and reach their potential.
What You’ll Do
As a volunteer, you will meet virtually with a student 1-2 times weekly for one-hour sessions. Your responsibilities will include:
- Ensure the student stays on track by reviewing upcoming assignments, preparing for quizzes and tests, and helping them understand and interpret the questions while guiding them as they complete their work.
- Utilizing learning platforms (IXL and Newsela) to strengthen skills and address areas where students need additional support based on their progress and observations.
- Communicating with the EDIFY Program Manager about updates, logging session notes, and developing plans for improving academic performance.
Fully Supported Volunteering
EDIFY is 100% virtual, and volunteers will receive training and ongoing support to feel confident and comfortable in their roles. Volunteers will complete a quick background check through the West Virginia Department of Human Services as part of the onboarding process. This simple step helps ensure a safe and supportive environment for volunteers and students.
