Students will assist with organic vegetable harvest, data recording, and plot management in the Market Garden area of the WVU Organic Research Farm. This could involve harvesting and weighing tomatoes, peppers, potatoes, zucchini and other crops, weeding, assist with moving irrigation, and general plot clean-up in preparation for the WVU Organic Farm Field Day on Aug. 24. There will also be descriptions of research projects at the farm, including crop variety trials, soil quality and conservation practices, lamb and sheep management, and requirements for maintaining organic integrity. Guided by farm workers and experienced interns, you'll be shown different stages of crop growth, and how to sort and grade vegetables, weed identification, and irrigation practices. There may even be extra vegetables to take home!
Volunteers should be able to use manual tools such as shovels and hoes, lift up to 30 pounds, and walk across rough ground. Bending and kneeling is required.
Closed-toed shoes are required. hats, sunscreen and long pants are recommended but not required. It is a farm and it is August.
