Who We Are

The Human Animal Bond, Inc is a grassroots non-profit organization founded in 2002 with the mission of conducting research, education, and training in the area of the Human Animal Bond to benefit both human and animal conditions. Our work focuses around the One Health concept that human, animal, and ecological well-being are intimately connected. We have worked closely with WVU since 2006 to offer courses, experiential learning and volunteer opportunities to students and community members.

What We Do

Our mission is accomplished through 3 major programs. Our flagship program was the development of the Hearts of Gold Service dog program with WVU where students participate in training service dogs while learning principles of animal behavior and husbandry and gaining an appreciation for the challenges facing individuals with disabilities and how dogs can mitigate both physical and psychological limitations. The Human Animal Bond now oversees the “Foundational Year” for the puppies entering the program. The Ridgeway Farm project supports community gardening and the Cheat Lake Farmers Market, outdoor recreation and education, and is in the process of renovating the Farm House to support cooking classes and Appalachian arts. The Jasmine Project is being developed on a 40-acre tract adjacent to Cooper’s Rock State Forest. The goal of the project is to develop an integrated animal supported living community where individuals can feel supported through transitional periods of their lives while helping to raise and socialize puppies for the service dog training program.
