Source for Success Mentoring Program at Skyview Elementary School
With the termination of the Big Brothers/Big Sisters Program in Monongalia County, West Virginia, the opportunities for students to engage in quality mentoring programs is minimal. Averee Fields, a social work intern through West Virginia University and Leslie Brooks, coordinator of “The Source” weekend food and nutrition program approached the administration of Skyview Elementary School in the fall of 2015 to try and create a new mentoring program, specifically for children living in Westover, West Vriginia. Jennifer Cox, Skyview’s Principal and Matthew Tolliver, Skyview’s School Counselor, have agreed to help support and the program, which is called The Source for Success©
The Source for Success© Mentoring Program is committed to providing children with positive and caring adult mentors. Through the carefully managed and thoughtfully considered one-to-one pairings, the goal is for the targeted students to build lasting friendships that will enhance their emotional, social, academic and vocational success. The program is solely a school-based mentoring program in which a Source for Success© Mentor makes a commitment to one (1) child on a weekly basis for no less than one (1) hour at school. The primary focus is on relationship building as well as tutoring and other academic and social-skill building assistance.
