Who We Are

The West Virginia Botanic Garden is a naturally beautiful 85-acre site about eight miles from the WVU campus outside of Morgantown. Approximately four miles of trails and boardwalks connect forests, gardens, and wetlands.  The West Virginia Botanic Garden, Inc. a non-profit organization, is working to develop the state's first and only Botanic Garden.

This is our mission: The West Virginia Botanic Garden at Tibbs Run Preserve seeks to foster learning, inspiration, and well-being through the beauty and wonder of plants, the natural environment, and culturally enriching experiences.

Volunteers are integral to the success and growth of the West Virginia Botanic Garden. Hundreds of people have given a hand, time, and treasures. As the garden grows, so does the need for more helping hands. There are many ways to volunteer at the WVBG. Review the volunteer descriptions on our website, wvbg.org, to find the ones that are right for you.

What We Do

We are developing a wonderful resource for the community of Morgantown and the region. The WV Botanic Garden is currently free to the public, and visitors are welcome to explore the 85 acres of forest from dawn until dusk every day of the year. Take a hike or jog, walk your dog on leash, calm your soul and commune with nature. Learn about and enjoy the flowers in the gardens or meditate in the forest filled with a variety of trees.

If you like to dig in the dirt, we have work for you. The Weekday Warriors do the heavier labor such as maintaining trails and planting trees and bushes. The Thursday morning garden crew maintains existing gardens by weeding, watering, mulching, and planting flowers.

The Education and Event Center is the headquarters for our staff and volunteers. A full-time executive director, six part-time staff members, and a Board of Directors manage WVBG. The lower level of the Education and Event Center is a classroom for educational programs. Many of the progams offered are free to members. Visit our website, wvbg.org, to complete a membership form. If you are looking for a great site for a special event, consider renting space in the EEC. Find information about this at wvbg.org.

Our activity schedule is posted on our website, wvbg.org. There is usually at least one event every weekend. The lower parking lot closes on weekdays any time after 4:00 p.m. and will be open on summer weekends from 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. when volunteers are available and weather is agreeable. The lower parking lot is also open for scheduled events. Garden Greeters/Hosts are needed from March through October. Program Assistants are needed all year to help with presentations, walks, and workshops. Guidelines for these volunteer roles have been developed and will be provided during training. Both Garden Greeters/Hosts and Program Assistants will be mentored by staff or veteran volunteers.
