Science Behind the Sport

Who We Are

WVU's Science Behind the Sport makes STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) real for K-12 youth. We've developed a series of educational programs that teach STEM topics through adventure sports.

Our curriculum currently includes 6 outdoor adventure sports: archery, rock climbing, cycling, paddling, skateboarding, and zip lining.

Science Behind the Sport is part of WVU's Brad and Alys Smith Outdoor Economic Development Collaborative. We work closely with Scouts BSA, Adventure WV, Extension/4-H, The Youth Cycling Coalition, and other community partners.

What We Do

Using outdoor classrooms and focusing on hands-on (and feet-on!) demonstrations that actively engage participants, we create unique opportunities to get youth excited about science!

At the 2023 National Scout Jamboree, we will coordinate dozens of volunteers to deliver mini lessons and complimenting activities (most are 3-4 minutes long) that focus on the science principles connected to outdoor activities. We're proud to say that our lessons have always been VERY popular among the Scouts, enhancing their experience and getting them excited about science.
