West Virginia Miss Amazing

Miss Amazing is a national self-esteem movement led for and by girls and women with disabilities. Events are held in more than 30 states around the country. This will be the first event in West Virginia. We are looking for participants (girls and women ages 5 and up who have a disability), volunteers to be “buddies” and assist participants throughout the day, volunteers to help with set up and tear down and running of the event, and “right hand men” who will escort the ladies on stage in formal wear. These can be men with or without disabilities. The event will be held October 29th, 2022 at the Robinson Grand in Clarksburg, WV. The Miss Amazing organization helps women and girls to develop confidence, life skills, and self-advocacy skills in a fun and supportive environment. Women and girls ages 5 and older who have an IEP, IPP, 504 plan, SSI, or a physician’s document proving disability are eligible to participate in Miss Amazing. The event is inspired by pageantry. Women and girls with disabilities participate in 3 skill areas: one-on-one interview, on stage introduction, and passion presentation. A representative in each age division in chosen to represent West Virginia at the national summit in St. Louis next summer. 

Our Approach: Ensuring equal opportunities for girls with disabilities to build self-esteem will require engaging with every level of society to dismantle stereotypes and to open up pathways for personal growth. 1. Empower Personal Development 2. Nurture Friendship & Community 3. Shift Perceptions 4. Drive Systemic Change The options available to girls with disabilities should reflect their boundless potential. But because of widely-held myths about their capabilities, girls with disabilities are often held back from taking risks that could enrich their personal development, deprived of opportunities to make friends, and granted less access to resources. As a result, girls with disabilities are more likely to experience low self-esteem than girls without disabilities. Miss Amazing is working to change that!
