The Preston County Youth Center  (PCYC) has established a Micro School. We are looking for tutors in reading, math, and writing, just to give our kiddos a little extra help. We are looking at a time frame of Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. The kids are in school from 8 am to 2:15pm.  We would love to have tutors come in and help out if possible.

SRSH works with local elementary, middle, and high schools to provide food bags every week.  Children in this program can discretely pick up a pack full of food for the weekend, and help to keep their bellies full until Monday. We welcome students to observe our Feeding and Swallowing Clinic. In fact, we have multiple students involved in clinic each week. Students here at Feeding Clinic represent a variety of majors including speech pathology, social work, nutrition, occupational therapy, physical therapy, medicine, pharmacy, law, education, counseling, nursing, psychology, and early intervention. During clinic, licensed mentors from SLP, OT, Psych, Social Work, Law, and Dietetics work together as a team to provide feeding assessments and needs assessments.

Seeking a volunteer to make Welcome phone calls to newly admitted hospice patients and families.  The call will be a scripted brief check in a few days after admission to make sure they have the local office contact information and see if they need anything at this time.

Looking for volunteers interested in making once a week companionship calls to hospice patients and families.  Calls provide socialization while ensuring families have all their needs met prior to the weekend.  Volunteers will make 12-15 calls per week. We are looking for an individual passionate about photography to help us document our classes and events at the Monongalia Arts Center. We want to use these images in promotional materials as well as have a visual record of our year of programming.

We are looking for tutors in our 9th/10th grade technical writing class as well as our Pre-Algebra Class.  If you feel competent in either area, please volunteer below.

Both classes are held Mondays and Wednesdays from 1:30 to 3:00.

West Virginia Academy is looking for an afterschool coach for our PreK through 5th graders.  We want to offer a sports class to help our youngest scholars get active and moving afterschool.  If you are interested, please sign up below.

Let's Grow Mountaineers!

These volunteer positions are responsible for weekly maintenance of WVU Campus Garden areas (on the WVU Campus on the Evansdale campus or at the Westover Greenhouse location) and at the First Presbyterian Church Food Donation Garden on Spruce Street/Forest Avenue. The WVU Campus and FPC Garden network grows food for local food pantries and food insecure individuals in Monongalia County.

Needs will fluctuate with growing season. All skill levels are invited to apply!  No experience is necessary, and students are especially encouraged to apply. WVU Extension Master Gardener program participants will be able to earn course credit at these locations. 

Positions are available largely during Spring, Summer, and early Fall months (eg: Late February to late November).

Volunteers will provide a variety of garden-related tasks, including but not limited to:

-Plant Care, including watering and pest/disease management

-Preparing and maintaining soils, including mixing compost, shoveling, and lifting heavy bags

-Assisting with building or modifying garden beds and trellising structures

-Applying fertilizers and other soil amendments

-Harvesting fruits and vegetables

-Deliveries to local food pantries, when needed

Garden volunteers may be asked to work special garden events, including those surrounding special harvests and garden-based learning workshops.  

Please note that most of these activities can be physically demanding. Volunteers will be required to provide their own personal safety protection and perform volunteer functions at their own risk.  Best efforts will be made to provide activities for volunteers who may need accommodation. Other positions are also available, including graphics design and public relations, grant writing, workshop volunteers and leaders, student advocates, and special event staff.

We're looking for highly motivated and dependable individuals to assist with building our seedling inventory this Spring. Volunteers in this area will be expected to seed, maintain, water/fertilize, and transplant our edible and ornamental plant starts for the upcoming growing season.

Seedlings can quickly experience stress from excess or decreased temperature, moisture, and other factors, making it extremely important to keep a close eye and do daily checks either individually as a team, sometimes twice a day to ensure plant health. 

Volunteers or interns must have a dependable daily/weekly schedule, work well in team environments and commitment to timely completion of tasks. They should able to independently maintain healthy plant cultures in a greenhouse and outdoor setting. Must be able to follow directions, have an acceptable range of mobility, and be able to lift 20+ pounds in order to restock medias and complete other required tasks of the position.

Some training will be provided, and weekly checkins with WVUCFG faculty will be required. Volunteers and interns are also required to maintain a current Agricultural Worker Protection Standard certification, pass Environmental Health and Safety training, and follow all other University and Campus Food Garden policies and procedures. Produce Safety Alliance certification or other Food Safety handler training is a plus, but is not required. 

Volunteers/interns will be interviewed to assess qualifications and suitability for the position, and may be asked to provide credentials or references.

Volunteers are needed to move approved preconsumer food waste materials from WVU dining locations and other local restaurants to compost bins at our Westover Urban Farm location.

Individuals must have reliable transportation (preferably a pickup or other truck), consistent schedule and be able to lift 20-50 lbs at a time. 

Individuals with interest in maintaining piles are also encouraged to express this interest when responding to the listing. 

This compost is used in the food growing and donation operations of the WVU Campus Food Garden, so an understanding of compost and food safety is an absolute must. However, training will be provided for those who are unfamiliar with this topic. Additional University trainings, like Agricultural Worker Protection Standard and EHS trainings, may be required. 

We are looking for experienced gardeners to lead Growing Season 2024 efforts at our Westover Urban Farm, Evansdale Garden, and First Presbyterian Church locations.

Less experienced or new gardeners should keep a look out for other volunteer postings.

Gardeners/farmers should be highly experienced in growing edible and ornamental plants. Produce Safety Alliance training is a huge plus, and other University farm worker and safety trainings will be required. Master Gardener certification is a huge plus, and we are able to assist you in fulfilling requirements for maintaining your certification. Food handlers training is also a plus!

Ability to lift and transport harvested produce to food pantry locations is a huge plus!

If interested, there are also opportunities to engage in youth and community development activities, like workshops, seminars, and other special events at the Urban Farm.

Responsibilities:

-Seedling care (watering, fertilizing, uppotting)

-Transplanting

-Regular garden maintenance (weeding, trellising, watering, amendments)

-Maintain plant and soil health, providing both preventative and reactive maintenance by identifying pests, diseases, nutrient deficiencies, and site security issues and notifying leadership as soon as possible to remediate. 

-Maintenance of compost piles (turning, watering, monitoring temperature, adding waste, etc)

-Willingness to assist in general site maintenance to ability (mowing, weedeating, fence installation/repair, assistance with greenhouse operations, etc). 

This position may require heavy lifting, although as a social justice entity, we welcome all individuals of differing abilities and are willing to make accommodations, as needed. As an industrial site, this location may present challenges to those experiencing limited mobility, so we appreciate notification of any accommodations you may need and discussion in advance.

WVUCFG is looking for a budding public relations, graphic design and social media specialist to create content for social media (Facebook, IG, and TikTok), websites, news articles, flyers, and more. Photography and Videography are required, so having professional equipment is a huge plus, but not required! Experience in Canva, Adobe products, CleanSlate, and other media design programs are a huge plus. 

This work will span over the 2024 Growing Season--February 2024 to November 2024. Semester-based appointments will be considered.

Time required is a minimum of 4 hours per month.

Help Mountaineer Spay Neuter Assistance Program (M-SNAP) reduce pet overpopulation and the killing of homeless pets.  M-SNAP addresses this problem by managing a voucher program that helps pet caregivers get their animals fixed.  We fund this program with the proceeds from ReTails, our thrift store located in the Morgantown Mall in Westover.  We have volunteer opportunities 7 days a week. It takes lots of hands and we need YOURS.  If you care, share some of your free time with ReTails.  We train and offer flexible schedules.

Lead art classes for children or adults

Conversations to Remember's virtual visit program matches 2-3 college students with residents of long-term care, assisted living, and memory care communities for virtual video visits. These residents have been suffering from isolation, and you could really brighten their days just by speaking with them. We provide training about the best ways to interact with the seniors, as well as additional support throughout your service. Since these visits are virtual, you can do it without any travel. This is both convenient, and allows more of your time to be spent volunteering, rather than commuting to the volunteering location. We provide this program free of charge to seniors across the country, and have students from around the country as well.

Typically, students volunteer 1-2 hours per week. Each call lasts up to one hour, based on the senior's attention span and mood on each day. We expect students to volunteer for approximately 16 weeks, so that they can build a friendship with the senior. This does not need to coincide with the start of a semester, as we have new seniors starting all the time, and train new volunteers weekly. Students are matched based on the times that they're available, with a senior who is available at the same time, and will have a regular, weekly appointment for their visit. Students wishing for more visits or other opportunities that allow them to volunteer more hours can be accommodated with different ways to volunteer, such as assisting us with our social media, call support, or outreach.

Morgantown Unity Manor is a high-rise for low-income seniors. Though we are an independent living facility, we aim to bring as much fun to our resident's lives as possible! We are looking for volunteers who are willing to come to our building and facilitate activities in our multi-purpose room. This could be crafts, chair yoga, fun info sessions, trivia, dance or music acts, etc. It can be a one-time thing or a regular occurrence. The possibilities are endless! We have a smart TV that is connected to Wi-Fi, a DVD player, a kitchen, and a patio with a large, covered gazebo that can be utilized. 

Note: Please consider the unique interests and needs of population you will be interacting with as well as the many barriers they face. Many of our residents experience health and mobility issues and several utilize wheelchairs, scooters, and walkers. Any printed text should be 25 point font and easy to read. While not the majority, keep in mind that some of our residents cannot read so you will need to offer alternative ways for them to access your activity (pictures, icons, verbal instructions, etc). 

Once you express interest in volunteering, the Service Coordinator will reach out to you to discuss your idea. When it is approved, you will be scheduled to come out. It is best to give at least 2-3 weeks notice to ensure the word gets out and you have as many participants as possible!

We are also tasked with fund raising and this will require an intelligently designed social media platform that will help us become better known throughout the State.  Ideally, this would also publicize our need for funding and motivate increased donations, contributions and grants. Volunteers would research, identify and perform the initial application documentation for funding and suggest/develop other opportunities for raising funds such as special events.

Some of this work could be handled remotely, with onsite interaction in Charleston, WV necessary for other needed assistance.

Seeking a volunteer interested in making personalized cards with handwritten messages of encouragement to hospice patients.  Each volunteer will be assigned a specific patient that they make cards or write personalized letters.

Do you love history? Arthurdale Heritage is seeking passionate museum docents for our summer tour season! Arthurdale Heritage is a 501(c)3 museum in Preston County, dedicated to the history of the nation's first New Deal community--Arthurdale. We offer tours Monday-Saturday during our tour season (May 1-October 31) from 10am-3pm. We particularly need volunteer docents on Saturdays when our staff takes a break, but we welcome volunteer docents during weekdays as well. Docents may also need to oversee our visitor center/gift shop if no other volunteers or staff are on site that day.

Docent training will be provided beforehand. 

Docents will be required to lead tours that last approximately 1 hr, 15 min, up to 4 times per day. The tour covers 5 historic buildings so walking is required. Part of the tour takes place outside so appropriate footwear/outerwear is required.

Harmony at Morgantown has a neighborhood called Harmony Square. Harmony Square is a secured memory care unit, our unit can hold up to 36 residents. We need volunteers to help with playing games with our residents, reading them short stories, or maybe even doing a one on one visit in the apartment.  

Please stop by the front desk to get your temperature checked and then you will be directed to my office on the 2nd floor, to fill out a volunteer packet. The volunteer packet is just basic information.  

The Morgantown Fire Department is building an ongoing partnership with WVU iServe users that would be interested in assisting with home fire safety visits.  The home safety visits are conducted within the community to raise fire safety awareness.  During a typical visit, we share common fire threats and try to identify any current risks.  We check smoke alarms, and if the resident is without or in need of new smoke alarms, we will install them free of charge.  Home safety visits would consist of a uniformed firefighter and iServe users. 

This training opportunity, would provide students with the basics of home fire safety including checking and installing new smoke alarms.  By attending a training workshop, iServe users would get two hours of community service credit.  The workshops will be offered monthly or bi-monthly to meet the demand of iServe users.  The workshops will be scheduled on Wednesday evenings or Friday mid mornings as needed.  Once the students have attended the workshop, they will be eligible to participate in the home fire safety visits.  The visits are also an ongoing iServe opportunity for community service hours.

Help Arthurdale Heritage preserve our historical documents, photographs, oral histories, and artifacts! We have an extensive collection related to the original 165 homesteaders who moved to Arthurdale in the 1930s. We always need help processing new collections, digitizing documents, transcribing oral histories, and managing our collection software. In-person and virtual options are available. Arthurdale Heritage is a historic community, located in Preston County, WV. We own and preserve 23 acres of the original 1,200 homestead project. Our organization oversees 8 historic structures, which require constant preservation and maintenance. We also have heritage goats on the property, which also need constant care! No experience required - we can train anyone who is willing to learn!

Horse/Barn Care typically involves feeding the horses, giving hay, picking hooves, putting blankets on/taking them off, checking waters, cleaning stalls, and sometimes other tasks to ensure our horses are happy and healthy. Horse/Barn Care volunteers come every morning and evening of the year, no matter the weather - rain, shine, snow, wind - to care for our herd. 

Thank you for your interest volunteering with the Avian Conservation Center of Appalachia. We are a 501c3 nonprofit organization dedicated to conserving the region’s wild birds through research, education, and rehabilitation. We were founded in 2012 and each year admit more than 500 injured or displaced wild birds and conduct environmental education programs throughout the region.

Typically, our volunteers each commit to one day of the week to help feed the birds and clean their enclosures. This is ongoing -- so if you commit to Tuesdays, for example, you come out every Tuesday until a time in the future when you decide you don't want to volunteer any longer or until your schedule changes or you leave town, etc. We try to schedule three or four volunteers per day—this makes the work go more quickly, and it helps with coverage if someone is away. Completing all of the daily volunteer duties takes at least one hour but typically not more than two.

Daily duties include preparing diets for all the birds; this includes cutting up dead rodents, chicks, quail, fish, or small roadkill (squirrels, rabbits), and handling live insects. Also, each day the newspapers are changed in the bottoms of all indoor cages. Any especially dirty cage pans, grates, or perches should be taken to the sink and scrubbed. Some patients will require medication; usually, this can be injected into or hidden inside the diet. Daily duties also include cleaning the counters, doorknobs, floor, and all other areas that get messy. There are also often "extra" tasks that vary depending on need -- disinfecting cages, doing the laundry, cleaning the air filter, putting away shipments of food or supplies, etc.

We also conduct educational programs featuring live, non-releasable birds. You are welcome to come help with our programs, and we can train you to work with the non-releasable birds in our care. All of the birds in our care are trained using positive reinforcement methods recommended by the International Association of Avian Trainers and Educators. 

The time of day that volunteers meet varies depending on the day and volunteer availability, but in general the birds need to be fed at least one hour before sunset. We are located on the same property as Cheat Lake Animal Hospital (about a 20-minute drive from downtown Morgantown and WVU).

The CASA volunteer’s primary responsibility is to serve as the “eyes and ears” of the Court, gathering information from the child, his/her biological parents, foster parents, teachers, counselors, etc. and make recommendations to the judge as to what is in the child’s best interest.

Advocates generally visit monthly with the child/youth. When the Court appoints a CASA volunteer to work with a child, these visits are just the beginning. The primary role of a Court Appointed Special Advocate is to:

Determine the needs of the child by reading the child’s entire welfare file, connecting with teachers, foster parents, social workers, doctors, mental health professionals, relatives, parents, attorneys– everyone involved in the child’s life throughout the case.

Facilitate social services and community resources to meet the needs of the child.

Advocate for the child’s needs to be met promptly and thoroughly. Write thorough, accurate court reports.

Monitor to ensure team members follow through on meeting the child’s needs.

Be trusted support for the child. In the sea of ever-changing faces, the CASA volunteer is the one person the child knows will keep coming back – each and every week.

There are no educational or professional requirements, but advocates must be 21 years old. Volunteers are carefully screened and receive 30 hours of training before being assigned to children.

M4M needs pet fosters for cat, kittens, dogs and puppies.  Fostering saves lives!!  

M4M provides all equipment if needed. This may include crate, bowls, food, toys, leash, collars, behavioral support while you have the pet, etc. 

All pets are fully vetted and "clean" for the foster - the foster just needs to provide a safe place and love. 

Some foster needs are only for a few days or a week -- others are open-ended and can be as long as a month.

Volunteers provide transportation to VA medical appointments to Veterans for whom transportation is a barrier to receiving healthcare. At this time there is an urgent need for volunteer drivers from the Morgantown area to the Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center in Clarksburg,WV. Opportunities in other counties may also be available. 

Volunteers may choose a window of availability they may set based on their own schedules however this opportunity is best for those who can commit to at least one year of involvement.

Volunteer drivers typically will use a van provided by the VA that is fully equipped with a plexiglass barrier and full PPE. In some cases a private vehicle may be used but mileage is not reimbursed. Drivers will not be transporting veterans who are ill, only those with regular scheduled medical visits.

Drivers must complete a Veterans Administration background review and have a valid drivers license. There is an additional physical exam provided by VA. You will be provided information and forms to complete when you sign up. This process can take up to 60 days.

Current infection control measures and privacy protection are part of the Volunteer driver training program.

Volunteer Job Summary

Transport ambulatory Veterans to and from their destination to their VA medical appointments.

Volunteers are responsible for cleaning out the inside of the van after each trip using supplies provided to you by VTN.

Follow all Infection Control guidelines for cleaning and Personal Protective Equipment

Collect patient names day or two before driving from Hospital Service Coordinator (HSC) through phone or in person

Contact Veterans the day before to schedule rides to VA medical appointments to ask screening questions. Do not transport patients who have symptoms. Contact the VTN Coordinator office at 7623 or 3669 to make other arrangements for the patient.

Report to the HSC for assignments, will keep log sheets, current and turn in trip tickets upon return to the medical center

Depart the medical center when the last patient has completed or finished with his/her appointment

Report accidents and van deficiencies to HSC

Minimum Requirements

PPD (blood test), complete driver’s physical, valid driver’s license, valid proof of vehicle insurance

Abilities Required

Ability to answer the phone, customer service skills, drive a vehicle, multitask

No smoking in VTN vehicles from volunteers and/or patients

Report any accidents or deficiencies to HSC and Engineering department using the protocol located in the glove compartment of your vehicle.

Pick up any of our donation drive boxes and DM Sarah Smith a photo of the box and it’s location to get 1/2 a service hour per box!

Our organization takes care of many sick or injured animals. We always need volunteers to drive our cats to their vet appointments or adoption events/foster homes. The dates of this volunteer opportunity will largely depend on the appointment times given to us by vet clinics in the area. 

If the veterinary clinic/foster home is nearby, our volunteers are only expected to spend however long it takes to drive the animals to their destination. You don't have to wait at the clinic. With that being said, we would appreciate it if the same person can both drop off and pick up the animals. 

We also need help picking up donations and supplies.

If anyone has a TRUCK that they would not mind using to help pick up donations that would be very helpful.

Masks are required.

Looking for Professors in the History Department or Students studying History to work on a local Sports History Project. It is time-sensitive, so please respond as soon as you are available.  This is not First Tee affiliated.

Individual projects such as helping to organize records, making phone calls, and developing protocols. This is a great opportunity to help if you don't have transportation or cannot foster animal.

Our organization rescues many cats that need temporary placements. These placements can last from a few days to a few weeks. Our rescue organization can provide all the necessary supplies to host the animals.

If you have the space and availability to host one or several cats, please submit an application through our  Website and sign up on iServe. We need you to sign up through our website because we want to vet our potential fosters before giving them an animal.

Foster parents will be awarded 40 community service hours. Responsibilities include feeding and cleaning after kitties, and socializing them for adoption.
