Volunteer: Reusable Latex Paint PICK UP EventThis year, the Monongalia County SWA started a Community Paint Reuse Program. The Community Paint Reuse Program collects latex paint from residents and screens it, to make sure it can be reused, and then provides it for free to residents, non-profits or other organizations wanting paint for beautification projects. This is our second Paint Pick Up Event this year where residents can stop by and check out the available reusable latex paint and take it home for free. Due to the location we need volunteers to help with directing residents to the paint pick up area and helping set up and break down after the event. Volunteers do not have to work with paint but we might need help loading the truck if there is a lot leftover. Not only will snacks and beverages be provided but lunch too! And, SABO Coffee Roasters will have their table set up to provide free samples and some of their coffee to purchase. A percentage of proceeds go to the WVU Children's Hospital in partnership with Sam's Club. Join us for what we expect to be a busy and rewarding day! Sustainability and Community at its Best! Volunteer: Tab Collection for RMHC of Morgantown & PittsburghRonald McDonald House Charities of Morgantown & Pittsburgh collected pop tabs annually to support their mission, a world where all children have access to medical care, and pledge never to turn a family away who cannot afford to stay. Pop tabs annually generate between $5000-$8000 for RMHC! The tabs are collected and recycled into cash! WVU is stepping up to collect tabs campus-wide and support our local RMHC, which is located directly next to the Health Sciences Campus & WVU Hospitals. RMHC ensures that families are supported and actively involved in their children’s medical care. RMHC's are located near top children’s hospitals, allowing parents who are far from home to stay close to their hospitalized child and benefit from the comforts of home without incurring hotel and food costs. 90% of top children’s hospitals worldwide are home to at least one RMHC core program. RMHC provides more than 2.2 million overnight stays annually, helping families save nearly over $611 million in lodging and meal expenses.
Please sign up to this iServe initiative AND send your name & picture to: maf00030@mix.wvu.edu for service hour verification. We encourage students, faculty, student organizations, alumni, staff, and community members to support the effort! The collection this year will continue until May 8th, 2026! Volunteer: OPERATION ACTIVET 5th annual Veterans BashThis event is our yearly fundraiser for our organization. We will have volunteers in multiple areas throughout the entire building. We will need help with walking the event and selling raffle tickets, as well as being stationed at tables, possibly selling apparel. We also understand that some may not feel comfortable around a large group of people. We can reassign them to our small snack and coffee area, since those items need to be restocked. Our bash is always catered, so no volunteers have to worry about handling food. This is now our 5th year of doing this, and the crowds have grown every year. We could be looking at 575-700 guests this year. I would like to include that we obviously know that most of the floor raffle games are all different, and can be confusing. We will be on the floor as well, and are always available to answer any questions that may come up. Organization: Operation Activet This event is our yearly fundraiser for our organization. Volunteer: Community Action Poverty Simulation 11/11/25A Poverty Simulation is a true-to-life role-playing experience for groups and organizations to experience first-hand the challenges, decisions, and life of someone in poverty. We are looking for volunteers who can help act out various institutions that groups and organizations will interact with during the simulation. Groups will be faced with daily decisions ranging from how to get the kids to school on time, find or maintain employment, visit the assistance office or church, pay your bills, and keep a roof over your head...all in the span of a few hours. Each 15 minute period of time accounts for exactly one week, and within that week and the three that follow, groups will learn what poverty really looks like and how it can impact every daily decision to be made. Poverty Simulations are thought provoking and lead to powerful conversations, and they help us all realize that it takes a community to end poverty. Volunteers are needed to help with the following parts of the poverty simulation: portraying a community service entity. Our simulations portray people interacting with housing agencies, financial institutions, schools, community health centers, and infrastructure providers. Our volunteer actors will be briefed on their role in the hour prior to the event with instructions on how to effectively act out their part. Your time commitment for this opportunity is 3 hours. All simulations will occur at the WVU Health Sciences Center. More information will be provided to you via email 1 week prior to the simulation. We thank you in advance for your time and commitment! Volunteer: Country Roads Peer Mentor ProgramClassroom Assistant The Country Roads classroom is a vitally important place for our students. What happens in the classroom sets the foundation for our student education and development as independent individuals. Classroom Assistants are an invaluable resource to our students and educational specialists. Classroom Assistant responsibilities include: helping instructors with group activities, providing one-on-one classroom instruction to certain students, assisting students in completing in-class assignments/activities, and assisting students with in-class organization and time management. Classroom peers may also assist Country Roads students with their homework and after-class activities. Study Hall is scheduled for Thursday 5:30-6:30 pm in Lincoln Hall; however, students have assignments due throughout the week and may benefit from working with a peer mentor. Activity Peer The objective of the Activity Peer is to help facilitate the Country Roads student's understanding and participation in regular campus activities. There are many options available on campus such as concerts or plays at the Creative Arts Center, various sporting events, or different interest groups available that would be meaningful to the students. On or off-campus clubs and organizations such as fraternities or sororities, student government, and community projects are some more great ways for students to get involved. Many of our students already play musical instruments and have other skills and abilities they want to be able to share. This is a great opportunity for relationships to begin, and for social skills to be modeled and learned. Students may have particular interests or may be completely open to trying new things! Lunch or Dinner Peer Eating with peers is always a welcomed activity, prompting relationships to occur spontaneously. This is a good chance for our students to be part of a “real college experience.” Country Roads students will have meal plans and will eat lunch and dinner on campus in the Towers Dining. Country Roads students, individually or in a small groups, are encouraged to adopt a meal on a particular day of the week to serve as lunch or dinner buddies for one or both of these meals. If interested, please email Dr. Lesley Cottrell at lcottrell@hsc.wvu.edu. Volunteer: Discover WVU Tech DayMust be WVU Tech Faculty, Staff, Student, or Alumni to volunteer As a volunteer at Discover WVU Tech, you’ll play a key role in welcoming prospective students and their families to campus. You might guide guests around as they explore the places where we live, work, learn, and play—showcasing everything from our high-tech labs and classrooms to our favorite campus hangouts. You’ll help guests navigate sessions where they’ll hear from the Dean of Students and Student Life staff, learning all about clubs, campus events, health services, counseling, and safety resources. You may answer questions or help direct students to the right sessions so they can get the most out of their day. If students are curious about residence life, you’ll help connect them with staff and direct them to our residence halls, where they’ll learn about living on campus and get a feel for their potential new home. You could also assist families as they meet with Financial Aid staff—making sure they get to their appointments to learn about FAFSA, tuition, and available support. Most importantly, you’ll help create a welcoming, encouraging environment where no question is too small and everyone feels like part of the Golden Bear community. Plus, you’ll probably get to hand out some swag along the way!
