The goal of this event will be for families and individuals to have fun and get out birding in their own backyards or other places within walking distance from where they live.
Here are the Guidelines
“Teams” may only consist of individuals or members of the same household.
A team’s count area must be within walking distance of where they live.
A team’s count area must be in one of the five West Virginia counties in Mountaineer Audubon’s region: Harrison, Marion, Monongalia, Preston, Taylor.
Count all the species you encounter only between 6pm on Friday, May 15, and 6pm on Saturday, May 16. Want to know how to identify birds? Visit ebird.org and explore birds recently seen in Monongalia County. Click on each species to get a photo, call sample and identifying characteristics.
Register ahead of time and report your bird lists by emailing Katie Fallon: katie@accawv.org.
To receive any service hour credit, you must email your bird list to Katie no later than 6:15pm on Saturday, May 16. You can keep your list on eBird or using another method of your choosing. Katie will invite participants to a Zoom meeting that will begin at 7pm on Saturday, May 16. You do not have to participate in the Zoom meeting to participate in the Birding Cup, but the winner will be announced during the meeting. You may also report service hours for attending the zoom meeting.
There’s no fee to participate and no expectation of donations! Just have fun and count the birds near you. You may report your hours on iServe for credit for time spent seeking and identifying birds only if you report your species to Katie by the deadline Additional credit will be given if you report your findings on ebird.org This is citizen science!
