“Perspectives in…” is a discussion-based series that provides students an opportunity to explore societal issues and social constructs that affect both service and the learning process. Supported by the Center for Service and Learning, the series seeks to explore voluntourism, power, health disparities and other topics identified by our student body.
In the current societal climate, our LGBTQ+ students sometimes find it difficult to be their authentic selves. Rosemary Ketchum, the speaker for our inaugural “Perspectives In” event, is the first openly transgender person elected to a public office in West Virginia. Serving on the Wheeling City Council, she champions creating an inclusive, accessible, and thriving community. With a plan to combat addiction, homelessness, lack of accessible public transit, and other public concerns, she is working to ensure that the values of the community will be reflected in the actions of the local leadership.
This “Perspectives In…” event aligns with Transgender Day of Remembrance. It raises public awareness of hate crimes against transgender people, provides a means to publicly mourn and honor the lives of men and women who might otherwise be forgotten, and expresses love and respect for our community in the face of national indifference and hatred. It reminds non-transgender people that we are all sons, daughters, parents, friends and fellow Mountaineers.
“Perspectives In…” was inspired by a student who, after completing the Mountaineer Volunteer Program (MVP), wanted to explore the courage it would take to serve his community while being himself.
