The West Virginia University Collegiate Chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (WVU NAACP) presents One Morgantown Community, a community service event designed to spread awareness about the effects of homelessness and hunger in our community.
Event Schedule:
Thursday, Nov. 17
6:00-9:00pm: The first portion of the event will be the assembly and distribution of care packages for the Morgantown homeless community followed by remarks from the organizations and services available in Morgantown for the homeless community.
6:00pm: Assemble care packages
7:00pm: Distribute care packages to High Street and surrounding areas
7:30pm Food will arrive while participants are Downtown
8:00pm: “Grass Discussion”—an opportunity to hear stories from members of the community, learn about services available in Morgantown, and ask questions
10:00pm-8:00am: The second part of the evening will be the overnight simulation of sleeping a night out in Morgantown out on the lair green. The cardboard boxes, tents, and/or any other sleeping needs will be provided by the participants.
10:00pm: Assembles boxes/tents for the sleep out
Friday, Nov. 18
8:00am-TBA: The morning following the sleep out will commence the event with the opportunity for participants to volunteer at locations downtown such as the Morgantown Community Kitchen, to serve lunch.
9:00am: Distribute remaining care packages to the Friendship Room, Ronald McDonald House and other locations, and have the opportunity to volunteer downtown
As stated initially, participation in each portion of the event is not mandatory, but strongly advised in order to gain the full experience.
All WVU students, faculty, staff, and community members are encouraged to participate. Community service hours may be earned and tracked in iServe by those who attend and help out between 6-9pm Thursday, or between 9-1pm Friday.
