Volunteer: Birthday Phone Call Volunteers Needed

A simple phone call can mean the world—especially on a birthday.

We are looking for compassionate volunteers to help us celebrate our hospice patients by making birthday phone calls. These short calls offer encouragement, kindness, and the reminder that someone is thinking of them on their special day.

What this role involves: Making brief, friendly birthday phone calls to hospice patients Offering warm wishes, conversation, and companionship Calls are typically short and can be made from your home Why it matters: Many of our patients have limited visitors or family nearby. Hearing a friendly voice on their birthday can bring comfort, joy, and a deep sense of connection.

Perfect for: Volunteers looking for a flexible, low‑time commitment Anyone with a caring heart and good listening skills Individuals wanting to make a meaningful impact, one call at a time No medical experience required—just kindness and a willingness to reach out. If you’re interested in helping our patients feel remembered and celebrated, we would love to have you join us.

Volunteer: Register as a Stem Cell Donor!

By joining the NMDP donor registry, you could help save the life of someone with blood cancer. Matching donors must be very specific—similar to organ donation—but the process to join the registry is simple, and donation is simple and painless like giving a blood donation.

To get started, register online and NMDP will mail you a cheek swab kit. Swab the inside of your cheek, mail the kit back, and confirm your registration by text.

Joining the registry does not mean you will definitely be called to donate. You may never be matched, or it could take months or even years. However, registering means that if you are identified as a match, you are willing to move forward with the donation process.

To register, simply do so on the NMDP website: https://my.nmdp.org/s/join?language=en_US&joinCode=marrow17&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=21894551707&gbraid=0AAAAADRYjn-PBU1U4ezaiuwD36FRq6yvQ&gclid=CjwKCAjwpcTNBhA5EiwAdO1S9heuxPe0W3eIoxKrs6Ytrnav8LdeNsvJ7TWVMTKkb6dbXf3R3Y6tPBoCxHwQAvD_BwE

For approval of hours, please submit proof of your registry and/or proof of your response to the text from NMDP confirming your spot on the registry.

Step Up to Support Foster Youth: Volunteer with EDIFY

At KVC West Virginia, we believe every child deserves the chance to thrive. That’s why we created the EDIFYProgram, a unique initiative that provides mentorship, academic support, and encouragement to foster youth in grades 3-7. These resilient students often fall behind due to the unpredictable nature of foster care, including frequent school changes that disrupt their learning and instability. With your help, we can change that.

Why We Need You

The EDIFY Program pairs volunteers with foster youth to offer academic support. As a college student, your knowledge across various subjects makes you well-qualified to help these students succeed. Many of our students require assistance with foundational skills in English Language Arts (ELA) and Math, and your support can help them catch up, build confidence, and reach their potential.

What You’ll Do

As a volunteer, you will meet virtually with a student 1-2 times weekly for one-hour sessions. Your responsibilities will include:

Ensure the student stays on track by reviewing upcoming assignments, preparing for quizzes and tests, and helping them understand and interpret the questions while guiding them as they complete their work. Utilizing learning platforms (IXL and Newsela) to strengthen skills and address areas where students need additional support based on their progress and observations. Communicating with the EDIFY Program Manager about updates, logging session notes, and developing plans for improving academic performance.

Fully Supported Volunteering

EDIFY is 100% virtual, and volunteers will receive training and ongoing support to feel confident and comfortable in their roles. Volunteers will complete a quick background check through the West Virginia Department of Human Services as part of the onboarding process. This simple step helps ensure a safe and supportive environment for volunteers and students.

This Is Your Chance to Make a Difference

By volunteering with EDIFY, you are helping foster youth succeed academically and giving them hope for a brighter future. This unique opportunity allows you to gain hands-on experience in education and mentorship while making a meaningful impact.

Volunteer: Virtual Visits

Conversations to Remember's virtual visit program matches 2-3 college students with residents of long-term care, assisted living, and memory care communities for virtual video visits. These residents have been suffering from isolation, and you could really brighten their days just by speaking with them. We provide training about the best ways to interact with the seniors, as well as additional support throughout your service. Since these visits are virtual, you can do it without any travel. This is both convenient, and allows more of your time to be spent volunteering, rather than commuting to the volunteering location. We provide this program free of charge to seniors across the country, and have students from around the country as well.

Typically, students volunteer 1-2 hours per week. Each call lasts up to one hour, based on the senior's attention span and mood on each day. We expect students to volunteer for approximately 16 weeks, so that they can build a friendship with the senior. This does not need to coincide with the start of a semester, as we have new seniors starting all the time, and train new volunteers weekly. Students are matched based on the times that they're available, with a senior who is available at the same time, and will have a regular, weekly appointment for their visit. Students wishing for more visits or other opportunities that allow them to volunteer more hours can be accommodated with different ways to volunteer, such as assisting us with our social media, call support, or outreach.

Please register to volunteer on our website, https://conversationstoremember.org
